Course Description

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who apply knowledge, practical skills and experience in leadership and management across a range of enterprise and industry contexts.

Individuals at this level display initiative and judgement in planning, organising, implementing and monitoring their own workload and the workload of others. They use communication skills to support individuals and teams to meet organisational or enterprise requirements.

They plan, design, apply and evaluate solutions to unpredictable problems, and identify, analyse and synthesise information from a variety of sources.

What kind of careers and work could I do?

This qualification suits people who want to work in a variety of leadership roles, including as a manager, executive, director and CEO. It is suitable for careers where you need sound theoretical knowledge and practical skills base and the ability to lead a team or an organisation. The range of potential careers is extensive with the Diploma of Leadership and Management including:

What are the entry requirements?

There are no entry requirements for this qualification although you will need to have well-developed language, literacy and numeracy skills. This qualification is best suited to people who have already gained a Certificate IV in a business-related field, or who have extensive work-place experience but no formal qualification.

How is the course delivered?

This course is run as a virtual classroom via Microsoft Teams with a trainer and other students. You will have 12 months to complete the course but may be able to complete it sooner than that.

What units I am required to complete?

You need to complete 12 units for this BSB50420 Diploma of Leadership and Management. There are 6 core units:

  • BSBCMM511 Communicate with influence
  • BSBCRT511 Develop critical thinking in others
  • BSBLDR523 Lead and manage effective workplace relationships
  • BSBOPS502 Manage business operational plans
  • BSBPEF502 Develop and use emotional intelligence
  • BSBTWK502 Manage team effectiveness

Packaging rules apply to the selection of 6 electives. Common electives include:

  • BSBLDR521 Lead and development of diverse workforces
  • BSBLDR522 Manage people performance
  • BSBOPS504 Manage business risk
  • BSBSTR502 Facilitate continuous improvement

Exemptions and Concessions

* Exemption: if you have a disability, chronic health, medical or psychological condition you may be eligible for an exemption, which means that the NSW Government will cover the full cost of the course. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders are entitled to an exemption from the course fee.
^  Concession: if you receive a Centrelink/Commonwealth means-tested payment you may be eligible for a concession. Concessions are not available at Diploma level qualifications under Smart and Skilled

How interactive and practical is the course?

At NTM this course is practical, interactive and with sufficient time to complete all your assessments. The course contains interesting readings and practical assessment tasks which you can complete at home or in your workplace. Assessment activities may include short written assessments, projects and case studies.

Pathways to further study and university

After successfully completing BSB50420 Diploma of Leadership and Management you have several pathway options including (NTM does not offer these qualifications):

  1. BSB60215 Advanced Diploma of Business
  2. BSB61015 Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management
  3. Direct entry into university with credit from a range of universities, for example, Bachelor of Business Studies at Charles Sturt University (CSU)
