This course is NOT an entry level qualification and is NOT suitable for early school leavers.

At NTM the CIV TAE40116 is via advanced entry, you need to have at least a Certificate III (trade ticket or equivalent) or higher qualification (CIV, Diploma or university degree) in your vocational area and at least three years experience in the vocational area you wish to teach in. Read our comprehensive article on Everything You Need to Know About TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

The TAE40116 is offered in part-time day mode only, we do not recommend undertaking the course through correspondence or online. As the CIV Training and Assessment course requires students to conduct three group training sessions it is almost impossible to complete the qualification online. At NTM the TAE40116 is only available in face-to-face delivery mode, with an actual teacher and other students. Some other providers require students who undertake TAE40116 online to find their own placement to complete the three group deliveries. Undertaking the course with NTM will ensure you have access to a teacher, and most importantly will be able complete your three group deliveries with other students at an accredited training provider.

The advanced version of the CIV TAE40116 is run 1 day per week over 18 weeks which is one semester.  All classes run from 9 am to 4pm, with flexible start and finishing times for those with caring responsibilities. Classes are face-to-face delivery. NTM is also taking expressions of interest for the general entry version of this course 1 day per week for 36 weeks. For “upgrading” or transitioning from the previous TAE40110 CIV Training and Assessment visit our upgrade page for workshop dates.

How is the course delivered?

This course is run face-to-face in a real training environment, NOT online, via distance or correspondence. You will have an actual teacher and other students in the training setting. Read our article on why the CIV TAE is NOT suitable for online and distance education, and why 94% of students do not complete their online courses. At NTM there is a combination of face-to-face training that is scheduled with additional assessments to complete at home or work. You will have 12 months to complete the course. At NTM you will have all your group deliveries included in TAE40116, meaning you will not have to find a vocational placement. The new TAE40116 is significantly different than the previous TAE40110, in that students must now undertake three group deliveries in an actual vocational training environment, this is impossible in online versions of the course.

Pathways to further study and university

After successfully completing the TAE40116 CIV in Training and Assessment, graduates have several pathways options:

  1. Entry into TAE50116 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training and/or  TAE50216 Diploma of Training Design and Development
  2. Entry into TAE80113 Graduate Diploma of Adult Language, Literacy and Numeracy Practice
  3. With vocational experience and qualifications, there are a number of advanced standing pathways into university programs such as the Bachelor of Adult Vocational Education and Training at Charles Sturt University (CSU) and other higher education providers

Volume of Learning

The amount of training allocated for the TAE40116 qualification is based on the prior experience of each student. Those students who have a lot of relevant prior experience may have the ability to complete the qualification in a shorter time-frame. However, those who are new to training and assessment will often take a longer time-frame to complete the qualification. Students should expect a duration between six (for advanced entry) and twelve months (general entry) to meet the requirements of TAE40116, which is consistent with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) volume of learning indicators for a Certificate IV qualification.

Licensing and regulatory information

Achievement of this qualification by trainers and assessors is a requirement of the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015. From the 1 July 2016 all trainers and assessors working in an RTO or TAFE will require the TAE40116 CIV Training and Assessment.

After completing the qualification, if you decide to continue working as a trainer/assessor, you may be interested in membership of a number of professional associations related to VET and workplace training. Velg training is one example of an organisation that provides membership benefits to trainers and assessors.
